The Tricon 3625C1 supports two basic types of digital input modules: TMR and single. The following paragraphs describe the digital input modules in general, followed by the details of TMR and individual modules. Each digital input module contains three circuits with the same channels (A, B, and C).

Although the channels are located on the same module, they are completely isolated from each other and operate independently. A fault on one channel cannot be transmitted to another channel. In addition, each channel contains an 8-bit microprocessor called an I/O communication processor, which handles the communication with its corresponding main processor.

Each of the three input channels asynchronously measures the input signal from each point on the input terminal module, determines the corresponding state of the input signal, and places the values into input tables A, B, and C, respectively. The I/O communication processor located on the corresponding main processor module periodically queries each input table through the I/O bus. For example, the main processor A queries the input table A through the I/O bus A. On the TMR digital input module, all critical signal paths are tripled to 100% for security and maximum availability. Each channel regulates the signal independently and provides isolation between the field and Tricon. (An exception is the 64-point high-density digital input module, which does not have channel-to-channel isolation.)
